Canon Adds 3 New Interchangeable Lens Cameras

News

2018.03.01

Canon took the wraps off three entry-level interchangeable lens cameras this week, two globally and one for the European market.

The Canon EOS M50 is a upper-entry-level mirrorless built around the EF-M lens mount. It pairs a new 24 megapixels Dual-Pixel CMOS sensor that can perform Phase-Detect AF at every pixel with a new DIGIC 8 processor. This combination can deliver full-resolution 24 MP images at a speedy 10 FPS for up to 33 JPEG images or 10 RAW files. It also makes the M50 the first Canon mirrorless that can record 4K Ultra-HD video at 24 FPS. Full HD is available at 60 FPS and standard HP at 120 FPS.

Although it offers a single control-dial, like most entry-level offerings from brands other than Fujifilm, the Canon EOS M50 sports a nice built-in viewfinder. The 0.39" EVF is very sharp with 2.4 megapixels of resolution and it provides 100% coverage at an unspecified magnification. Given its size though, around 0.6-0.65X is expected. The camera designed has been refined from previous Canon mirrorless and now offers a deeper grip.

Expect the Canon EOS M50 to ship at the end of this month for $799 USD. Amazon, B&H Photo and Adorama are already all accepting pre-orders at these links.

Next is the Canon EOS 2000D or T7 as it is known in North America. Normally this would be the lowest end entry-level DSLR but Canon managed to make something lower which is discussed further down. The Rebel T7 is built around a 24 megapixels CMOS sensor. It offers a dedicated 9-Point Phase-Detect AF system. This one used the last generation of processors so it can only capture 1080p HD video rather than 4K. Its shutter and mirror mechanisms allow 3 FPS continuous shooting for up to 150 JPEG images or 11 RAW files.

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 is made of a lightweight body with a single control-dial and a tiny optical viewfinder with 0.8X magnification and cropped 95% coverage. It is about as simple as a DSLR can be, although it does offer Depth-Of-Field preview but not Spot Metering. Canon added Partial Metering as consolation though but neither is likely to be used by the target audience. Another glaring omission is the lack of Dust-Reduction which has become nearly ubiquitous lately. What would be used though is integrated WiFi and Bluetooh 4.1 LE.

Slotting itself at the very low end of the Canon EOS range is the 4000D. This is a plastic version of the T7 using an older 18 megapixels CMOS sensor and a decidedly old 2.7" LCD with 230K pixels. This is the first DSLR to ever feature a plastic lens mount, right down to matching black screws. It is designed to offer an overly simplified feature-set to deliver DSLR image-quality at a never-seen-before price-point.

Both the 2000D and 4000D offer an ISO 100-6400 sensitivity range, expandable to 12800, and 3 FPS continuous drive. Having smaller flies though lets the 4000D shoot JPEG images indefinitely yet only fits 6 RAW files in its buffer. These two new cameras are expected soon although exact date and pricing is not available yet.
