Micro Four-Thirds vs APS-C

The state-of-the-art 20 MP Four-Thirds CMOS sensor in the Olympus OM-D E-M1X delivers impressive image-quality. Given that the price of this mirrorless digital camera is comparable to those wich much larger sensors, it makes sense to see the performance difference between the E-M1X and a larger-sensor digital camera. Here we compare it to the Nikon D500
Nikon D500
which is the action-oriented Nikon ASP-C DSLR. All images below are 100% unmodified crops from their respective cameras. Aperture, white-balance and ISO were set on the camera, the remaining settings were left on automatic.

Given that the surface area of the D500 sensor is 2.25X E-M1X, this comparaison shows a surprisingly small gap. The performance of the D500 shows just one stop advantage. Even so, there is virtually no difference between ISO 100-400 and a very slight one at ISO 800.
