Nikon Coolpix AW100 Summary
Nikon Coolpix AW100 Assessment
As Nikon's first everything-proof camera the AW100 enters boldly with a body that is waterproof down to 10m, shockproof to 1.5m and freezeproof to -10C. Plus, this ultra-compact packs a built-in GPS, digital compass, world map and a 5X wide-angle optical zoom lens with image stabilization.
The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is also built around a high-speed 16 megapixels CMOS sensor which can shoot at 7.1 FPS and capture full 1080p HD video. It also adds a number of video modes to slow down action up to 8X. Packing all this into a small digital camera allows it to be taken anywhere while introducing a few inevitable compromises.
Overall the AW100 turns in a performance which is better than most rugged cameras with excellent auto white-balance, nicely saturated colors and low optical distortion. There is noise visible at all sensitivities but since the resolution is so high, most common print sizes are good until ISO 1600.
See our full-length review for an in-depth look and images samples at all ISO sensitivities.
