Fujifilm GFX100S II Summary
Fujifilm GFX100S II Assessment
Essentially a slimmed down version of the class-leading Fujifilm GFX100 II, this new Medium-Format camera has identical image-quality while being smaller and lighter. It barely makes compromises to do so!
The 102 MP Medium-Format BSI-CMOS HS sensor of the Fujifilm GFX100S II renders the highest quality images of any camera. The amount of detail, sharpness, color and dynamic-range together are unmatched. With such high dynamic-range, this camera exposes any scene with ease, making its metering system incredibly reliable.
An IBIS mechanism inside the GFX100S II, stabilizes images by an outstanding 8 stops. This applies to any lens, including completely mechanical ones. Its fast 425-Point Phase-Detect AF system is highly reliable. Although recent Full-Frame cameras can focus even faster, the Fujifilm GFX100S II has sophisticated AF features, including effective subject-tracking.
At 102 MP, its 7 FPS continuous drive provides this camera an impressive throughput. This is a fair speed yet it is not fast enough to consistently capture peak action. There is a noticeable lag which is avoidable using the electronic-shutter but a noticeable blackout remains regardless.
A fantastic EVF is built right into the GFX100S II. This large 0.5" OLED unit has an ultra-sharp 5.8 MP, a comfortable 0.84X magnification, 100% coverage and an essential Eye-Start sensor. There is also a flexible rear LCD and completely configurable monochrome status LCD.
This Medium-Format Digital Camera packs features required by professional photographers, including dual control-dials and dual symmetric memory slots, into a durable body what is both weatherproof and freezeproof. Ergonomics are great too, save for the tiny default EC button. However, with its expansive feature-set, the number of external buttons is a little restrictive.
Photographers who need the highest image-quality available can depend on the Fujifilm GFX100S II. Of course, it comes with the expected compromises of Medium-Format, most notably its relatively large size and limited speed. Although the body of this camera is not so bulky, lenses with the required imaging-circle are necessarily so.
