Indoor Crops

Below are sample crops from an indoor photograph taken at each of the Fuji Finepix F770 EXR's ISO settings. A crop from the Fujifilm Finepix F80 EXR
Fujifilm Finepix F80 EXR
at the same ISO setting is shown next to each one of the F770 EXR. Images below are all unmodified 100% crops from their respective cameras taken at the highest quality setting.

These crops help determine which ISO settings can be acceptably used. As noise increases, most cameras compensate with noise reduction which introduces softness. The result is that, while you can partly reduce noise at the expense of details, the maximum acceptable print size gets smaller as ISO is increased. The point at which a print become unacceptably noisy is a matter of personal taste.

Right from the start the F550 EXR shows visibly more image noise than the F80 EXR, showing the superiority of Fuji's SuperCCD over their new CMOS version. The difference decreases slowly at each ISO and by 1600, results are mostly equivalent. By ISO 3200, the CMOS sensor of the F770 EXR takes the lead but at that point image quality is degraded so much that it matters little.
