Nikon Coolpix P7000 Samples
Nikon Coolpix P7000 Indoor Crops
The crops below show the performance of the Nikon Coolpix P7000 next to the same ISO for the Fujifilm Finepix F200 EXR
Fujifilm Finepix F200 EXR. These cameras have a large sensitivity range, starting at ISO 100 and going up to ISO 3200 at full resolution, the P7000 also has full-resolution ISO 6400, while the Fuji goes up to 12800 but resolutions goes down to 3 MP.
All crops below are 100% from their respective camera taken at the highest image quality setting available. ISO was set on camera. To optimize the output of the P7000 both Noise-Reduction and Sharpness settings were changed from their defaults, otherwise images looked way too soft compared to the F200 EXR. All other settings were left at their default values. These crops help determine which ISO settings can be acceptably used on these cameras. As noise increases, most cameras compensate with noise reduction which introduces softness. The point at which a print become unacceptably noisy is a matter of personal taste.

The first 3 sensitivities are now virtually equivalent in terms of noise and details. This definitely highlights the importance of adjusting camera settings as defaults are rarely optimal. At ISO 800, the Nikon Coolpix P7000 pulls a bit a head but by ISO 1600 it is clear that Nikon has finally overthrown the previous fixed-lens high-ISO champion. The F200 EXR still captures more dynamic range which we can get a hint of by the deeper blacks and darker exposure chosen. Colors here are stlightly more realistic on the Fuji but the P7000 does have controls to change this to your liking.
