50 Gifts Under $50 For Photographers in 2021

Introduction

Holidays are upon us and, after a year that has been brutal for most, people need to be celebrated and inspired! Gifts for photographers in your life are easy to find and can be very afforable. Often, small tools can make a real difference and renew interest in photography.

Neocamera just published its selection of Best Digital Cameras for 2021 for those who are ready to upgrade but the price of new cameras is fairly high, so there are plenty of smaller gifts for photographers that cost under $50 USD. Here we present 50 such gifts for photographers. Prices may be slightly different locally but all these gifts are available from Adorama which ships to almost anywhere in the world. Amazon has plenty of those as well.

The majority of gifts shown here are universal and compatible with any digital camera. A few items, as noted below, are available in different versions or sizes to match a specific camera or lens. Check that specifications match the intended camera or lens for compatibility before ordering.

Camera Support

Camera support is essential to acheive critical sharpness and work with long exposures. Good tripods, while essential for certain types of photography, are expensive and often inconvenient to carry. The alternative which is very light and extremely versatile is a flexible tripod. None is as well-regarded as Joby's Gorillapod which is available in a number of sizes.

Joby Gorillapod 3K

Joby recently revamped their lineup with an easier number system based on the number of kilos each model can handle. The mid-range Gorillapod 3K is strong enough to support the majority of mirrorless digital cameras with a short zoom lens. It now comes with its own compact ball-head and quick-release plate for about $45 USD.

Lighter cameras can be mounted on a smaller version, the Gorillapod 1K that supports up to 1kg. This is suitable for entry-level mirrorless with a lightweight prime lens or variable aperture zoom. At $28 USD, this is a very afforable option. The top of the Gorillapod 1K has a ballhead that screws directly into the camera tripod mount.

Remote Triggers

A remote trigger has many photographic applications. It is extremely useful when taking pictures from a tripod or Gorillapod to avoid shaking the camera. It also lets a photographer be in front of the lens sometimes. If there is a single photographer in your family, chances are there will be very few photos of him! A compatible remote can change this but check if the camera supports one and be aware that not all cameras do.

Remote Controls

Here are the most common remotes for recent digital cameras:

  • The Pentax O-RC1 works with any Pentax camera with an infrared receiver. Pentax is the only maker with a waterproof remote. This is a great complement to one of their DSLRs or remote-enabled cameras.
  • The Nikon ML-L3 is compatible with most recent Nikon DSLRs, all their Mirrorless cameras and some of their premium compacts. Check current Nikon IR-Remote enabled cameras.
  • The Sony RMT-DSLR2 which is very sophisticated and also serves as a viewing remote when the camera is connected to a television! It is also inexpensive at $30 USD.
  • Most newer digital cameras have a Bluethooth interface which allows them to be controlled by phone, yet that option is unweildy. Canon offers a dedicated remote, the Canon BR-E1, that is truly afforable.

White Balance

Modern digital cameras are generally good at getting colors close to neutral. To get them perfect under any conditions, particularly indoors where cameras struggle more, custom white-balance should be used. Most cameras other than the most basic point-and-shoot models support this.

What is needed to use this function is a perfectly neutral object. This lets white dresses and snow appear as white as they are. These objects, called White-Balance Targets, are available in pocketable or large versions. Larger versions are easier to use, while pocketable ones are easier to carry:

  • The WhiBal G7 Pocket Card measures 3.4" x 2.1", making it roughly the size of a credit-card. It attaches to a key chain, making it readily available on the go.
  • For a large target that gives better color averaging, go for the Novoflex 8"x12". It has one white side for color-balance and one mid-tone grey for metering.

Camera Straps

Camera straps are a big thing among photographers. While cameras all come with a strap, the included straps are absolutely basic. Higher-end models are not so expensive and can make an immense difference in comfort and photography speed.

Zeiss Air Cell
  • At below $50 USD, the Zeiss Air Cell is the most comfortable and cheapest way to own the Zeiss name. This ultra-padded shoulder-strap makes heavy cameras feel light! It provides the security of a standard strap with much less stress on your neck.
  • The Zeiss Air Cell can be hard to find, depending on where you are, but similar comfort is possible by slipping an ordinary shoulder-strap into the RLSOCO Shoulder Strap Pad. It adds generous padding, but makes the strap stiffer.
  • The ultimate for candid and street photography is the hand-strap. This type of strap holds your hand against the camera while providing great freedom of movement and more safety than going strapless. Hand-straps from Canon and Sony, plus third-party ones are available. These are generally interchangeable but many photographers prefer brand-names to match.

Lens Filters

Photoshop and the other image processing software may offer thousands of digital filters but there are a number of filters that cannot be simulated by software. Such filters are very helpful when properly used under the right conditions.

NOTE Not all lenses accept filters and most fixed-lens cameras do not have a filter-thread. When a lens accepts filters, only one size fits directly on the lens. A larger one may be used with a step-up ring but will not let you use a lens hood at the same time.

Filters
  • Polarizing filters are used to cut glare, eliminate reflections and darken skies. Single-Layer Circular Polarizers are available for under $50 USD. If you can afford it, the Hoya HD Polarizers family are the best polarizing filters and worth every penny. Buy a large size and use step-up rings to bridge the gap to save money.
  • ND filters are used to reduce incoming light. While they can be used to photograph very bright subjects, like the sun, they are mostly used for the artistic effect of long shutter-speeds. Waterfalls, seascapes and light trails are all excellent subjects to use these filters with. ND Filters come in different sizes and strengths. ND8 are very popular and reduces light by 3 stops.
  • UV Filters provide protection against flying dangers like salt-water and sand. In the presence of these such as photographing near the ocean or desert, it is a good idea to protect your lens with a UV filter. In normal conditions, UV filters must be kept off to avoid a reduction in image quality due to flare. In the presence of light sources, this is very obvious. As a general protection mechanism, it is preferable to use a lens hood. Most lenses come with one or one can be ordered for it. Hoya makes Hardened-Glass HD UV Filters for extra protection.

Inspiring Books

Photographers usually love looking at beautiful images. They show us the world, inspire us to travel and take more photos. There is a lot to learn from looking at what others photographers have produced. The best way to see plenty of great images is to look at photo books. These are often themed so that one can find a book to suit most tastes.

National Geographic has been synonymous with stunning photography for decades and they have published several books filled with hundreds of their best images. For their size and quality, these books are an excellent value.

Kolor Panobook, which used to be published annually, is a very good inspiration for panorama enthusiasts. Its wide format let it present images which seldom make it into books. There are also several panorama books for specific locations such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and London.

Learning Books

Photography is a complex craft with both artistic and technical aspects to learn. Beginners particularly keen on advancing their photography skills can learn plenty from books. Starting with general knowledge is a good idea before moving on to specialized topics. A good number of books are reviewed on Neocamera already.

Here are some great books, starting with the Photographer's Eye, the most in-depth book on composition. If you have to learn one thing about photography, it should be composition. The next essential subject is exposure and the classic reference in the topic is Understanding Exposure. The two following National Geographic books are general references.

Specialized books cover more complex topics. In the case of flash photography, systems work differently and practical books are written with a particular one in mind.

Miscellaneous Gadgets

There are plenty more gadgets for photographers and some of them are even quite useful! One huge time and battery saver is a dedicated memory-card reader. These lightweight devices greatly speed downloading speed and they avoid having the camera tied-up during transfers.

Choosing a memory-card reader is very straight-forward now that cameras converged on a couple of card-types. By far, the most common type of memory-card is SDXC, with the UHS-II variant being significantly faster than its predecessor. Check your camera specifications to known if it uses SDXC cards. Otherwise, it is most likely to use XQD or CFExpress Type B, which have the same form-factor. A handful of Sony mirrorless have slots that accept both SDXC and CFExpress Type A cards. The other side of a card reader is either USB-A or USB-C. Choose the more modern and versatile USB-C if your computer has USB-C ports:

  • The Kingston Workflow SD Reader features dual SDXC UHS-II memory-card slots and connects via USB-C. This modern reader provides fast transfer speeds in a lightweight form-factor. The impressively compact Anker 2-in-1 USB-C Reader handles SDXC UHS-I and MicroSDXC cards for those who also have devices using the smaller card-format.
  • An incredibly light Kingstop Mobilite Plus USB 3.2 SDXC Reader weighs just 9 grams! This unit is ideal for computers with USB-A ports. A more versatile option that supports both SDXC and MicroSDXC memory-types is the Anker 2-in-1 USB 3.0 Reader. Its SDXC support is restricted to UHS-I which is fine for those who do not own more expensive UHS-II variants. This is a true bargain for just $17 USD.
  • Newer CFExpress memory cards are less widely support and so their readers are more expensive. Still, for under $50 USD, the SanDisk Extreme PRO Card-Reader supports both CFExpress Type B and XQD memory-cards. It connects via USB-C. Those requiring a CFExpress Type A reader have to pay a little more. The ProGrade CFExpress Type A and SDXC UHS-II Dual-Slot Reader is quite versatile though for $80 USD.

Slightly tilted images are infuriating and image processing to correct for tilt can noticeably affect sharpness. To avoid this, a 3-axis bubble-level can be mounted onto a camera hot-shoe. All DSLRs and most mirrorless have one, but check to be sure before ordering. While these are simple devices, too cheap ones have low accuracy. The highest-rated model currently is the Chomlives 3-Axis Spirit Bubble-Level.

Remote flash triggers are incredibly popular to work with off-camera lighting. Many, such as the highly reputable Godox CT-16 can trigger flashes up to 30m (100') away. It mounts onto a standard hot-shoe and even a camera Sync-Port, for these equipped with one. There are 16 RF channels to choose from, allowing multi-flash setups and minimizing interference.

There are all sorts of gear to consider for different types of photographers or for the family to join-in on the fun:

  • Kids and teenagers will enjoy the Kodak Printomatic Digital Instant Print Camera. This unique hybrid camera is fully automatic and only offers an optical tunnel viewfinder for framing. It makes prints on ZINC 3" x 2" stickers that come right out of the camera. It also saves images captured by its 5 MP sensor into a MicroSD memory-card. The starter bundle comes with 10 ZINC stickers. These prints are durable, water-resistant, tear resistant and smudge free!
  • Photo Paper also makes a nice gift as it encourages printing that changes the aspect of images. Most printers can handle standard 8.5" x 11" which has a very close aspect-ratio to 3:2 that is the most common for modern cameras. Larger 13" x 19" paper makes impressive art to display around the home. Try Epson Ultra Premium Glossy Photo Paper that comes in packs of 50 for 8.5" x 11" or 20 for 13" x 19". A completely different look is possible using Epson Velvet Fine Art Paper that is made from 100% cotton archive-quality rag.
  • Outdoor enthusiasts will love receiving a Solar USB Power-Bank! Modern cameras, espacially mirrorless models, have relatively short battery-life yet many modern cameras can be charged via USB now. This allows them to be powered by a USB Power-Bank but that also needs to be charged. Enter Solar models that pack up to 26800mAh. A fast-charging one folds out into 4X the surface area compared to a simpler yet lighter model. Both cost the same and offer the same amount of power.
  • Those who like to photograph indoors can have fun with an affordable light tent that makes it easy to capture objects and artwork with even lighting. The Neewer 32" Light Tent comes with 4 backgrounds and folds away into a compact disk in an instant. The smaller Photo Studio Light Box is self-illuminated and comes with 6 backgrounds. Its stiffer construction is better for smooth backgrounds.
  • Revice legacy glass using a lens adapter. In this price-range, only mechanical adapters are available which is suitable for lens that have manual aperture and focus rings. Be careful to chose one that pairs the desired lenses and camera mounts. Nikon F to Sony E mount and Canon EF to Sony E mount are among the most popular options.
