Assessment

Rating the E-300 was somewhat of a dilemma. Its image quality is good, but every other DSLR does better, both in terms of image sharpness and noise levels (specially above ISO 400). Its ergonomics are usable, but again every other DSLR does better. Its viewfinder is the smallest and darkest viewfinder of all DSLR cameras. So why is it not a poor camera? First, there is a unique sensor cleaning system. Then, there is a unique sensor form factor (4:3 aspect ratio, 2X focal-length multiplier) which promises to allow smaller/lighter lenses and cameras. Though the E-300 is not smaller and lighter than all entry-leve DSLR cameras, it lenses offer good value. Finally, the E-300 does not produce bad images, they are noisier than the competition but still a step up from most fixed lens digital cameras.

All that being said, we recommend all other DSLR cameras above this one, the Canon Digital Rebel XT for example.
