Assessment

This camera is extremely similar to the Nikon D70. The mostly minor changes are: larger LCD (2" vs 1.8"), faster focus, improved flash, improved battery. new menu system. A firmware update to the original D70 provides most of the improvements (of course not the LCD, battery or flash cgnages - all of which are very minor). Due to this, owners of D70 cameras should not have any compelling reasons to purchase the D70s.

There aren't many competing models, but the Canon Digital Rebel XT is one with a similar priced. Compared to the D70s, the Rebel XT has a sharper higher resolution sensor with less noise but it built cheaper and isn't as fast as the D70s. Between the two, the Rebel XT is probably the better camera, although for owners of Nikon lenses, the D70s is indeed an excellent choice.

Note that this camera has been demoted from its excellent status since most current DSLR cameras now exceed its performance in all areas.
