Assessment

The D60 is the latest refinement in Nikon's entry-level DSLR range. It is one of the smallest DSLRs ever made and features a simple feature-set, not to confuse people getting their first DSLR. Although it cannot be compared with high-end Nikon cameras, the Nikon D60 features strong ergonomics and build quality for its price.

Among entry-level DSLRs, the Nikon D60 is among the fastest in terms of responsiveness. Image quality is very good with low image noise, accurate colors and good retention of details. The only truly weak point of its image quality is a tendency to overexpose which occurs more often than with competing models.

In terms of competition, the Nikon D60 faces the Canon Digital Rebel XS, the Sony Alpha A200 and the Pentax K200D. Most differences in image quality between these cameras are more likely due to the choice of lens than the sensor. Feature wise, the K200D leads the pack with not only built-in stabilization, like Sony's Alpha 200, but also weather-proofing and convenient use of standard AA batteries. The advantage of the D60 is that Nikon has a much more extensive lens line-up than Pentax or Sony. Canon, on the other hand, has the widest selection of lenses but has compromised more on ergonomics and build-quality in its entry-level offerings than Nikon.
