Assessment
With the Fuji Finepix E900, Fuji has produced an excellent digital camera with a complete feature set including full-manual controls, manual-focus, custom white-balance and RAW mode. Fuji is also currently ahead of the competition with a very low-noise 9 megapixel sensor. Noise levels are a bit higher than the Fuji Finepix S9000 but still significantly better than other cameras in its class.
The Fuji E900 also improves on the shortcomings of its predecessor, the Fuji E550 which had limited low-light capabilities. Still, the E900's main weaknesses are its low-light focusing and LCD visibility which are behind the competition. Battery life is also superb with 270 shots (CIPA standard) using 2 AA batteries. Its closest competition, the Canon Powershot A620, achieves 500 shots but using 4 AA batteries.
All in all, the Fuji Finepix E900 is an excellent camera for its class. For low-noise up to ISO 800 in a compact camera, this is the one to get. Note the point-and-shoot Fuji Finepix F10 has even lower noise levels but lacks the advanced features of the E900. For those who need a camera which is more usable in low-light, see the excellent Canon Powershot A620.
