Tamron Creates Unique Full-Frame Zoom
News
2022.09.29
Tamron officially launched one of the most unique lenses on the market! Their new Full-Frame zoom covers both an extremely wide and standard angle of the view which so far has always required two separate lenses.
The new Tamron Di III 20-40mm F/2.8 VXD captures a 56-94° angle-of-view when mounted on a Full-Frame Digital Camera and maintains a bright constant maximum aperture of F/2.8 throughout its range. The only lens with the same focal-range, the Pentax HD DA 20-40mm F/2.8-4 ED DC WR Limited, is specifically designed for APS-C cameras and therefore spans a 39-70° viewing-angle which is not wide-angle at any focal-length. This new Tamron lens, however, spans a little ultra-wide focal-range (20-24mm), covers wide-angle completely and reaches just beyond what is considered the standard focal-length of 35mm.
Even though there is only a 2X optical zoom ratio between 20 and 40mm, the fact that it goes from dramatic to a natural perspective is very interesting and gives it some expressive flexibility. The Tamron Di III 20-40mm F/2.8 is well suited for architecture, indoor, group and general photography. In combination with its bright aperture, this lens could be really capable with astrophotography too.
Tamron is building this unique model as a premium lens with all the corresponding features and finishing. There are wide ribbed rings for both zoom and focus, with the latter operating as Direct Manual Focus ring. The front of the lens accept 67mm screw-on filters which will come in handy for capturing the night sky or light trails. Tamron made this lens weatherproof too. The only aspect that does not match premium expectations is the price!
The Tamron Di III 20-40mm F/2.8 VXD is launched exclusively for Sony E-mount and is expected to ship at the very end of October 2022 for a suggested retail price of $700 USD or $1030 CAD. Both Adorama and B&H Photo are ready to take on pre-orders.
