Sony Produces 35mm G-Master Prime

Sony just introduced their fourth 35mm prime lens for Sony E-Mount, which all offer Full-Frame coverage and weatherproof construction. The new Sony FE 35mm F/1.4 GM is designed to deliver the ultimate optical performance for this focal-length and an ultra-bright maximum aperture. This lens supersedes the Sony FE Distaton T* 35mm F/1.4 ZA co-designed with Zeiss in 2015 and offering the same combination of focal-length and maximum aperture.

The new Sony FE 35mm F/1.4 GM is takes advantage of state-of-the-art optics with dual Extreme-Aspherical lens elements that refract light uniformly across wave-length, resulting in high sharpness and a relatively compact optical design. At 524g, this is the smallest and lightest 35mm F/1.4 lens for E-mount and the second lightest among all such Full-Frame lenses. The 35mm F/1.4 GM sports a declickable aperture-ring marked in 1/3-stops.

Sony made a number of design choices to make this lens more suitable for video than previous models. It all-internal AF mechanism uses dual linear motors to focus silently and precisely without changing the size of the lens. The declickable aperture-ring is also designed to avoid causing noise or sudden steps while filming. Finally, the front focus-ring offers a linear response for more deterministic manual-focus.

The Sony FE 35mm F/1.4 GM is scheduled to ship next month for $1400 USD or $1900 CAD. B&H Photo is currently accepting pre-orders and ships internationally.
