Sony Creates 3 New APS-C Lenses
News
2022.06.01
Today Sony announced a trio of lenses for their APS-C mirrorless digital cameras. They have been emphasizing Full-Frame cameras and lenses for years now, triggering speculation that APS-C system would be abandoned. By bringing three new lenses to market, Sony is reassuring that they remain committed to the APS-C format.
The most unique lens today is the Sony E PZ 10-20mm F/4G. This ultra-wide angle lens is a Power-Zoom lens. Its zoom ring is fly-by-wire, similarly to the focus-ring. A secondary rocker also controls the focal-length. Plus, the zoom can be controllable remotely. With its 10-20mm focal-range, the Sony E PZ 10-20mm F/4G is equivalent to a 15-30mm lens on a Full-Frame camera, giving a fairly wide 109° maximum angle-of-view.
The new Sony E PZ 10-20mm F/4G is a G-series lens which indicates premium optics and construction. This is among the few such Sony E lenses for APS-C cameras. This model is weatherproof yet incredibly light, weighing just 178g and measuring 7cm long. The lens accommodates 72mm screw-on filters.
A more standard offering is simply the new Sony E 11mm F/1.8. This is an ultra-wide prime lens with good build quality and simpler controls than G-series lens. Exceptionally for a standard APS-C lens, the Sony E 11mm F/1.8 is weatherproof. This lens captures a 104° angle-of-view with a bright aperture.
This is a very compact lens and one of the lightest for Sony E-mount, weighing just 181g. The lens accepts 55mm screw-on filters. Its 12cm minimum focus-distance gives it a 0.2X magnification.
The traditional premium addition today is the Sony E 15mm F/1.4G. This wide-angle prime lens comes of a large maximum aperture. Its G-series status signifies premium optics, construction and controls. The internal focusing system is controlled by a large focus-ring and a mechanical aperture-ring gives tactile controls. There is a switch to change between AF and MF on one side and one to declick the aperture-ring on the other.
The new Sony E 15mm F/1.4G is fully weatherproof. Impressively, Sony managed to keep this lens just 7cm long and a mere 219g in weight. This is exceptional for such a bright and wide lens. 55m filters are accepted at the front of the lens. The Sony E 15mm F/1.4G can magnify 0.15X at its closest 17cm focus-distance.
All these new lenses are expected next month. Those who were waiting for new Sony E APS-C lenses can start by preordering them already for the following prices:
