Sigma Unveils High-Resolution Fp L Mirrorless

News

2021.03.25

Sigma just took the wraps off a high-resolution mirrorless built around the Leica lens-mount. Following the same design as the incredibly compact Sigma Fp, the new 61 megapixels Full-Frame Sigma fp L boasts over twice the resolution and support of an optional electronic viewfinder.

Externally the fp L looks remarkably like its predecessor. It claims once more to be the smallest Full-Frame Digital Camera, shaving a few millimetres compared to the original Sigma fp. The main difference is that the original 24 MP sensor was replaced by a 61 Megapixels CMOS sensor with built-in Phase-Detect AF. This new version also introduces support for an external EVF which the fp could not and made it the most-restricted Leica-mount camera on the market. A new large and rather clunkly 0.5" EVF with 3.7 megapixels and a nice 0.83X magnification is available yet sold separately.

Sigma kept the main specifications of the new fp L largely unchanged. The higher resolution sensor maintains the incredible ISO 6 to 102,400 sensitivity range of its predecessor! At oddly adds an Anti-Alias Filter which will limit the output resolution of photos but proceed to reduce moire during video-capture. The design of this camera and the original fp is clearly focused on video. With the new sensor, output widens to Cinema 4K that can be recorded at 30 FPS. Full HD (1080p) is still supported but at a maximum of 60 FPS, rather than 120 FPS. The other aspect that unsurprisingly took a set back is continuous shooting. While the 24 MP could handle 18 FPS, the larger volume of data from the 61 MP sensor limited continuous drive to 10 FPS, which is still more than most situations requite.

The highly compact Sigma fp L offers dual control-dials, a number of customizable buttons and a large 3.2" LCD with 2.1 megapixels on the back, all in a weatherproof body. It can record video in Cinema DNG now with bit-depths of 8, 10 or 12 format. This, in addition to standard Quicktime 8-bit 4:2:2 output.

This new Full-Frame Mirrorless is scheduled to ship soon for $2500 USD. The optional viewfinder will set you back a good $700 USD though. A bundle will make it possible to get both for $3000 USD.
