Panasonic Launches Lumix G95
News
2019.04.08
This morning Panasonic announced a new addition to their lineup of Micro Four-Thirds mirrorless digital cameras, further demonstrating their commitment to the mirrorless platform they originally launched. The Lumix G95 unveiled today succeeds the G85 with an new sensor, redesigned ergonomics and improved durability.
The Panasonic Lumix G95 is built around a 20 MP Four-Thirds sensor without Anti-Alias Filter to capture the maximum amount of details delivered by the lens. The sensor is paired with a fast Venus Process to render sharp images with natural colors. The G95 sports an improved 5-axis image-stabilization system, now effective to 5 stops over hand-held shooting. It combines with in-lens optical image-stabilization into a Dual IS system capable of compensating for larger movements than before.
This new mirrorless joins the latest Panasonic hybrid digital cameras to offer advanced features for both photography and videography. The high-speed shutter in the G95 can continuous shoot at 9 FPS or 6 FPS with Continuous AF. In 4K Photo mode, this increases to 30 FPS using a completely electronic shutter which is also used to record 4K Ultra-HD video. The same sensor output can be used to perform Post-Shot Focus, Focus Stacking and Live Composition. A new Live View Composite Recording has been added to progressively compose a bulb exposure.
Video capabilities of the G95 are extremely well-rounded. 4K Ultra-HD can be captured at 30 or 24 FPS and Full HD at even at 60 FPS, all with Full-Time Autofocus. The camera provides clean 4K Ultra-HD output over HDMI and two minijack sockets for stereo input and output, a new addition to the G95.
Although slightly larger than its predecessor, less than 5mm in each dimension, Panasonic has made significant improvements to the ergonomics of the G95 which is designed for single-handed operation. This is one of the few cameras to feature triple control-dials, giving direct access to all exposure parameters. Additionally, it sports a traditional Mode Dial, a useful Drive Mode dial and direct buttons for EC, ISO and WB within easy reach.
Framing is possible with the improved 3" LCD, now with 1.2 megapixels and mounted on a rotating hinge, or with the same excellent EVF retained from the G85. This 0.5" EVF has 2.4 megapixels and shows a very large view with 0.74X magnification and 100% coverage. An Eye-Start Sensor automatically switches between the EVF and LCD.
Panasonic built the Lumix G95 around a new magnesium allow frame with weatherproof and freezeproof construction. The body boasts seals in every joint, dial and button. A number of additional features made it into this camera, including Bluetooth 4.2 LE connectivity and USB charging.
The Panasonic Lumix G95 is scheduled to ship next month for a suggested retail price of $1800 CAD or $1200 USD, including a kit lens. Body only versions have not been announced yet.
