Nikon Launches Two New Fixed-Lens Digital Cameras
News
2019.01.17
Nikon unveiled two new fixed lens digital cameras for 2019 both featuring exceptionally long optical zoom lenses for their form-factor.
The new Nikon Coolpix A1000 is a Travel-Zoom that fits an incredible 35X stabilized optical zoom lens paired with a 16 megapixels BSI-CMOS sensor. Its sensor has an ISO 100-6400 senstivity range and is capable of recording 4K Ultra-HD video at 30 FPS and continuously shoot 16 MP images at 10 FPS.
This digtal camera combines its high powered zoom lens, covering a 24-840mm range, into a compact body with dual control-dials plus a built-in 0.2" EVF with an Eye-Start Sensor. Having an EVF allows more stable shooting and better visibility in bright light. The viewfinder unit has roughly 1 megapixel of resolution which is reasonably sharp but unfortunately shows only 98% coverage linearly (96% by area). Its magnification is unspecified yet given a 0.2" size, it is most likely on the small side.
Like most Travel-Zooms, the A1000 offers full manual controls. It also does exposure bracketing, custom white-balance and offers the three most common metering modes: Matrix, Center-Weighed and Spot. This camera can also shoot RAW which is not very common among compact models. The new 35X optical zoom lens on the A1000 is even highly usable for macro photography and can focus down to 1cm from the lens.
Expect to see the Nikon Coolpix A1000 ship next month for $700 CAD.
Also sporting a powerful zoom lens, the new Nikon Coolpix B600 is a point-and-shoot ultra-zoom. This digital camera sports an extreme 60X optical zoom lens, equivalent to 24-1440mm, also paired with a 16 megapixels BSI-CMOS sensor. The much longer reach makes the B600 quite a bit larger than the A1000, yet it remains light-weight for its class.
This is a much simpler model to operate and features numerous scene positions yet no manual-controls or control-dials. All users that to do is point, zoom and shoot. There is a button to assist with framing far-away subjects and two controls to operated the optical zoom which is fully stabilized. The B600 has a slightly narrower ISO 125-6400 sensitivity range and record 1080p Full-HD video at 30 FPS. Its continuous drive delivers a respectable 7.7 FPS to capture moving subjects.
The Nikon Coolpix B600 is scheduled to ship next month for $480 CAD.
