The Pentax K-7 is undoubtedly the most feature-rich DSLR made to date. Its unique horizon correction, built-in level, 100% viewfinder and white-balance preview helps photographers take better pictures. Its 14.6 MP resolution, maximum ISO of 6400, 5.2 FPS continuous drive, built-in stabilization and cold-resistant weather-sealed body makes it suitable for every photographic subject as well. Add to that one of the most sophisticated movie-modes among DSLRs and we got here the most verstatile DSLR there is.

 

Compared to its predecessor, the K-7 improves or stays the same on every aspect other than ergonomics. While the K-7 does very well for its size, the larger K20D does better in terms of hold and control access. At about half the price, it is worth considering the K20D as a great value against the K-7, although photographically the K-7 is the better camera.

 

It's hard to consider other cameras as competitors since the K-7 has a unique feature-set and form-factor. As far as getting something better than the K-7, there are some models like the Canon EOS 50D and Nikon D300 which can shoot faster and track focus continuously better than this Pentax. These are naturally more suitable for action photography. Low-light performance is topped by more expensive and larger full-frame models like the Nikon D3 and D700. Finally, fans of live-view will have to stick with Canon 50D or Rebel XSi which give a WYSIWYG preview compared to the K-7's implementation.
