Pentax K100D
Overall Score: Excellent Excellent

Assessment

The Pentax K100D is an excellent DSLR camera which provides spectacular value. First, it is one of least expensive digital SLR cameras available. Second, its built-in image stabilization means stabilized lenses are not required. Thirdly, AA batteries are the cheapest and most flexible power source. Also, SD cards are now even cheaper than Compact Flash for most card sizes. Finally, since the K100D supports every Pentax KA lens ever made, even medium-format lenses, there are lots of opportunities to get low-cost second hand lenses.

The K100D produces very high quality images with great colors, low noise levels, accurate focus and spot-on exposures. Ergonomics are really great, with an easy to hold and use design. The little there is to complain about are a few missing features. The only important limitation is a shallow continuous buffer. As such, this camera is not recommended for action photography. For action photography, where stabilization is not important anyway due to subject-movement, the Nikon D70s and Canon Digital Rebel XT will be more useful. In low-light however, the Pentax K100D is superior thanks to its built-in stabilization and low-image noise.

The only other currently stabilized DSLR camera is the more expensive Sony Alpha A100 which does perform better for action photography with unlimited 3 FPS continuous shooting but in low-light the A100 shows relatively high image noise starting at ISO 800. This counterbalances the usefulness of its built-in stabilization.
