Assessment

The Kodak P880 is an interesting camera with its very wide-angle mechanical lens good picture quality. Compared to other camera in its class, the P880 produces sharp images with accurate colors and low purple fringing. This camera operates mostly at average speeds. Focusing accuracy is very good, even in low-light, but it does so very slowly. The main problem with this camera's image quality is noise levels which are ever present but only strong above ISO 100.

There are only two fixed-lens digital camera with such wide zoom lenses, the 8 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 8400 and the 10 megapixel Sony R1. In terms of quality and price, the Kodak P880 is closer to the Nikon 8400 than to the Sony R1. Overall, the P880 is better than the Nikon 8400 thanks to its mechanical 5.8X optical zoom lens, wider aperture at telephoto, sharper lens and more consistent metering. The Sony R1, on the other hand, is a larger and more expensive camera which delivers better image quality, particularly in terms of noise, but is much less ergonomic.

As for cameras without such a wide-angle, the excellent Fuji Finepix S9000, Konica-Minolta Dimage A2, Konica-Minolta Dimage A200 and the Olympus C8080 all deliver better image quality, faster performance and more comprehensive feature set. Of all the cameras discussed here, the Konica-Minolta A2 and A200 are by far the most ergonomic.
