Assessment
Here is another good digital camera from Canon, although this particular mode fell short of the excellent Canon Powershot SD1000. In terms of specifications, these models differ only in the size of the LCD (3" vs 2.5") and the lack of an optical viewfinder on the SD750. However, review samples revealed several differences in image quality and ergonomics.
On the good side, images show good exposure, adequate sharpness, low-intensity purple fringing, excellent speed and low image noise at ISO 200 and below. On the negative side, review samples showed poor automatic white-balance both indoors and outdoors, although mostly in shade. This problem makes it less than ideal for point-and-shoot operation. However, custom white-balance proved to be very accurate. Additionally, this digital camera's 3" LCD left the camera's rear rather crowded and several of its controls are rather fiddly.
None of the problems mentioned above exist with the Canon Powershot SD1000, making it a superior alternative. Compared to the modern competition, the SD750 performs well with good speed and below average noise levels. Note that this is still an ultra-compact camera and although noise-levels are better than average, ISO 400 and 800 are only usable for small prints. ISO 1600 is mostly useless. The only way to do better with an ultra-compact camera is to go with a Fuji Finepix F-series like the Fuji Finepix F31fd and the Fuji Finepix F40fd.
Going with the Fuji F31fd also overcomes the SD750's problems of flash power and battery-life. The Fuji F31fd has a battery life of over 580 shots, nearly three times the SD750's battery life.
Another interesting option is the Canon Powershot SD800 IS which features a stabilized 3.6X wide-angle optical zoom. The versatility of the SD800's lens should not be overlooked.-
