Assessment

This DSLR from Canon performs so well that finding something to criticize about it was difficult. Although it is missing some features compared to other cameras in its class, nearly everything that the Canon EOS 40D does, it does very well. Image quality and speed are great. What is not perfect is its white-balance system which occasionally leaves a color cast, particularly under artificial lighting. Ergonomics could be better, although anyone who is used to a Canon D-series will find himself in familiar territory.

The most intense competition for the 40D will most likely be the Canon EOS 30D. While the 40D adds two more megapixels, a bit of speed (6.5 FPS vs 5 FPS), dust-reduction and a better LCD, the 30D is several hundred dollars cheaper in many places. The difference in cost can be invested in better lenses which, in all likelihood, will improve image quality.

As for other brands, the Nikon D200 is probably the most similar to this DSLR. It shoots just a bit slower but has true weather-seals to protect against splashing and better ergonomics Finally there is the Pentax K10D which is equipped with more technology such as built-in image-stabilization and true splash resistant weather seals but only shoots at 3 FPS.
