Assessment
The Sony Cybershot T9 may be an improvement over the T7 but it is still below average when compared to today's competition. What is good about the T9 is its elegant and ultra-slim metal body which houses a 3X optically stabilized lens. This partly compensates for the camera's weak flash and ever-present noise. While DC Resource found the noise to be lower than average, DC Review found it to be worse! Samples seem to indicate that the T9 performs better than average above ISO 400 but worst than average below that. Note that ISO 400 is nearly useless on most ultra-compact cameras, so better than average is still too high for large prints.
On the down sides, the T9 produces images with a soft look and pronounced corner softness. This digital camera features a poor white-balance system which in automatic and preset mode leaves a noticeable color cast under artificial lighting. The remaining down sides are typical of average ultra-compact cameras.
Finally, the current street price of the T9 means that you can get the much better Fuji Finepix F10 for less. This leaves no reason to get the T9. The Canon Powershot SD550 and SD500 are also good candidates instead of the Sony Cybershot T9.
