Pentax *ist DL
Overall Score: Good Good

Assessment

The Pentax *ist DL is another good DSLR camera from Pentax. It has two outstanding advantages over the competition: its great ergonomics and its use of standard AA batteries. The ability to use AA batteries (rechargeable or not) and even CR-V3 batteries should not be underestimated and considerably increases the freedom of using a digital camera. This makes Pentax DSLR cameras, including the DL, more portable than others. The Pentax *ist DL has also very low noise for such an entry-level DSLR. Its main disadvantage is a simplistic 3-point focus system which is slow, particularly when faced with moving subjects.

The Pentax *ist DL offers a compelling choice compared to its competition. It is easy to use and is a capable performer which is available at a low price. The Pentax *ist DS2 is a more advanced model from Pentax which has a larger viewfinder and faster auto focus speed. Even though the Nikon D50 shares the same sensor as the DL, it trails it in terms of image quality with softer images and the occasional moire problem. Another entry level DSLR is the 8 megapixel Canon Digital Rebel XT which shows better image quality and auto focus speed.

Note to Canadians: At the time of review, the Pentax *ist DS2 retailed for exactly the same price as the DL in Canada. Since the DS2 is the better camera with a larger viewfinder and a better auto-focus system, it would be preferable to get the DS2 instead.
