The Nikon Coolpix L1 may be larger than most compact digital cameras but it does have a 5X optical zoom which gives more reach compared to most competing models. Images from the L1 are quite acceptable except perhaps for corner softness. The camera otherwise performs quite poorly and offers very little photographic flexibility.

 

The 5X optical zoom is really the reason to consider this camera, otherwise the Nikon L1 shows nothing exceptional. Unfortunately for this camera, the Panasonic LZ2 exists along with a 6X stabilized optical zoom, faster operation and much better battery life. If the long zoom is not important, the Nikon Coolpix L1 is trumped by several other compact models, including the Fuji Finepix E550, Fuji Finepix E510 and the excellent Canon Powershot A610.
