Assessment

The D70 represents Nikon's entry into the affordable DSLR market. The D70 does not disappoint in that area with a sturdy Nikon camera body, support for Nikon F-mount lenses, complete photographic control and a fast burst mode with good buffering.

Relative to the competition, the Nikon D70 is quite robust, very fast and with image quality only slightly below average in terms of noise and moir‚ artifacts. For better image quality, keeping a solid build and fast continuous shooting, the Konica-Minolta Maxxum 5D is worth a look. Even better image quality, but compromising on build quality, can be obtained with the Canon Digital Rebel XT. Note that differences are minor, anyone wishing to reuse a collection of Nikon lens, shouldn't feel trapped with this camera.

Note that this camera has been demoted from its excellent status since most current DSLR cameras now exceed its performance in all areas.
