Assessment

The Fuji Finepix F470 is among the most purely point-and-shoot cameras available, even exposure compensation is hidden away in a scene-mode called manual. It is successfully designed with simplicity in mind. While we would only recommend it for the most basic photographer, it produces images of sufficient quality for medium size prints with appealing, though somewhat over-saturated, colors. The body of this camera is extremely well designed and gives it the surest grip of any ultra-compact camera we have seen to date. The main flaw the Fuji F470 is the overly warm colors it produces.

Compared to other cameras, the F470 offers outstanding simplicity which certain has a set target audience. Its lack of manual controls, specially custom white-balance, will push away anyone who likes to experiment and grow his or her skills. There are a few ultra-compact cameras which perform better in terms of image quality but none are as simple to use this one. Nevertheless, all such cameras have an equivalent fully automatic mode.

One point-and-shoot model with better image quality is the 5 megapixel Fuji Finepix V10. For a bit more control, superior image quality and superior battery life, check out the Fuji Finepix F10 or Fuji Finepix F30. Full manual controls are rare in the ultra-compact category but can be found in the Casio Exilim EX-Z750, Casio Exilim EX-Z850 and the Casio Exilim EX-Z120. Note that the Z120 is the only ultra-compact camera with full-manual control which uses standard AA batteries for power.
