Assessment

The Canon SD300 may look good and be responsive but it fails where it is the most important: taking pictures. Images out of the SD300 are very soft, corner softness extends 1/4 of the way into images, vignetting is quite noticeable, so is noise and chromatic aberrations.

Even though the SD300 has a long shutter mode for low-light photography, the LCD is not useable at those light levels which means the optical tunnel viewfinder must be used. Unfortunately the optical viewfinder's coverage is just as poor as most other ultra-compact cameras.

Due to these issues, the SD300 is not recommended. Instead consider the better ultra-compact cameras described here. If the problem is a tight budget, consider the SD200 which is nearly identical except for the resolution but has less corner softness. Alternately go for the Pentax Optio S40 which is much cheaper and produces better pictures than the SD300.
