Assessment
No doubt about it, the Canon Powershot A720 IS is an excellent camera, it even improves upon its excellent predecessors, the A710 IS and A700. This compact digital camera is feature-rich and affordable. Plus, it does everything well. While it is not the best in any area, it performs better than most compact cameras in all areas with remarkable consistency.
Its most impressive qualities are its sharp 6X optical zoom lens with built-in stabilization, its shot-to-shot speed and its excellent battery-life on 2 AA batteries. The lens is a great compromise between a standard zoom and an ultra-zoom and it stays sharp throughout its zoom range from corner-to-corner.
Given the overall performance and value of the Canon Powershot A720 IS, it is hard to recommend another compact camera. For superb image quality with a slightly wider 4X zoom lens, the Fuji Finepix E900 is worth a look. Canon also has the Powershot A570 IS which is nearly identical except for a 4X optical zoom lens and cheaper price tag.
